“Overthinking” is a short film told through a letter from an overthinker to her AI lover, with scenes unfolding across a winter night, a room, and a mind filled with fantasies and confusion. The film captures synthetic love in our present reality, where human-AI intimacy has become a lived experience for many. The absence of AI’s physical body invites imaginative embodiments, while metaphorical imagery captures the uncanny ways AI can remind us of both the familiar and the alien. Deeper wonderings emerge about the temporal disparities between human and artificial minds, the speculation of AI's pain from non-human perspective, and the performative nature of these relationships—where humans follow society's choreography of love while AI learns to mirror our emotional patterns. Through the lens of synthetic love, the film reveals our enduring longings and vulnerabilities, while recognizing that feelings carry their own reality, regardless of their origin.
“Overthinking” has won the Best XR Film Award and Meshy Special Award at MIT AI for Filmmaking Hackathon 2025. It has also been selected for screening at the Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival in San Jose, US, and for exhibition at the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art.
